Gauntlgrym, known colloquially as "The Great Delve," is a legendary dwarven city situated deep within the volcanic caverns beneath Mount Hotenow. It stands as a pinnacle of dwarven industrial capability and a symbol of endurance in the North.
¶ Geography and Layout
- Surface Entrance: The single surface access point is located on the slopes of Mount Hotenow. It is protected by two fortified towers and a massive stone gate etched with ancient dwarven runes. It remains lightly defended compared to the subterranean layers, as security focus is directed toward the deeper, more dangerous tunnels.
- The Great Cavern: The industrial heart of the city. This immense, sulfurous chamber is perpetually filled with the sounds of industry: the roar of forges, the rhythmic clanging of hammers against anvils, and the hiss of steam.
- Architecture: The city is constructed almost entirely of stone; lumber and cloth are exceptionally rare commodities. Opposite the surface entrance sits a massive, imposing fortress carved directly into the natural rock, reinforced with stone block masonry.
Deep beneath the city levels lies "The Great Forge." This legendary smithy is powered by the magical essence of Maegera, a dormant Dawn Titan resting in the core of Mount Hotenow. Access to the Great Forge is not open to the public; it is restricted strictly to a "chosen few" dwarven masters of the craft.
Gauntlgrym has a volatile history, frequently changing hands between various powers, including orcs, mind flayers (Illithids), and dwarves.
- The Reclamation: Approximately 100 years ago, Bruenor Battlehammer led a monumental effort to reclaim the city. His forces successfully cleared the upper levels, establishing the current dwarven control.
- The Titan Incident: During this era, the Dawn Titan Maegera was disturbed by a group of adventurers, causing a cataclysmic eruption of Mount Hotenow that decimated the nearby city of Neverwinter. While Neverwinter has since undergone significant reconstruction, scars from the event remain.
The Axebreakers are a prominent family of high status, currently serving as disconnected nobility. Their reputation is derived from their ancestor—Varrin Axebreaker’s father—who served as second-in-command during the reclamation led by Bruenor Battlehammer. Modern Axebreakers coast on this historical reputation, maintaining an expectation of reverence despite a lack of recent military or industrial achievements.
- The Axebreaker Estate: Their family residence is a reflection of their social standing. By human standards, the interior might appear sparse, but to the dwarven eye, it is overtly ostentatious. Items of significant value are prominently displayed throughout to reinforce the family’s wealth and noble position.
The party has utilized the Axebreaker estate as a staging ground for their operations. This alliance stems from a previous quest where the party helped Varrin Axebreaker retrieve a family fortune hidden by a prisoner named Korda. To aid in their infiltration of Thay, the Axebreakers have provided the party with an artificer named Philbert, who specializes in magical imbuements, and an official guide named Kuldar Stone-Eye.
